Who We Are

The Harvard European Law Association (HELA) is a student organization that aims to foster an academic and political debate on aspects of European and international law within Harvard Law School and among the broader community.

Our effort to emphasize the European dimension of issues stems from an awareness of the importance of the structural and political transformations currently underway in Europe. Now more than ever, Europe connotes a political rather than just an economic union.

Such striking structural and political transformations call for further reflection and debate over the very idea of Europe as well as over the social, political and philosophical ideals informing the European project. In this context, HELA aims to establish a forum for open and critical discussion, hosting speakers who embrace diverging cultural and political commitments and reflecting diverse European backgrounds.

We hope to foster an ongoing dialogue among graduate students and JDs as well as to build a network connecting HLS to a host of “European groups” active in the Harvard community and in other schools such as the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies.
