Dear Prospective Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in joining the Board of Student Advisers (BSA). Our organization is responsible for providing teaching assistance in Legal Research and Writing (LRW), administering the 1L and Upper-Level Ames Moot Court competitions, and serving as peer advisers for first-year law students. We aim to foster a supportive, intellectually engaging, and inclusive environment. The BSA therefore prides itself on demonstrating a high level of empathy, a passion for mentorship, and a strong understanding of legal research and writing. Consequently, there is no single set of experiences or qualities that defines a successful applicant.

Every 1L has a BSA. We aim for a body of dedicated individuals reflecting the experiences, perspectives, and aspirations of the students we serve. We want every 1L to feel seen and empowered, and we believe that a team with a wide range of perspectives is essential to meet that goal.

As part of your application, we will evaluate various factors, including but not limited to a written application and live interviews. Each individual application is evaluated holistically to make this process as equitable as possible. In alignment with our mission, we look for demonstrated empathy, mentorship skills, and LRW teaching ability.

The role of a BSA is an important one. From guiding new students to achieve their personal and professional goals to promoting continued excellence through Upper-Level Ames, members of the BSA commit a significant amount of time and energy to make the HLS experience more fulfilling for their peers. Applicants should be enthusiastic to join the BSA community and mindful of this commitment.

Thank you for your interest. We look forward to reviewing your application!

Sincerely,
The Board of Student Advisers
