Amb. Frederic Gateretse-Ngoga
Ambassador Frederic Gateretse-Ngoga is a seasoned diplomat and expert in international security, governance, and regional partnerships. He currently serves as the Senior Advisor on International Partnerships, the AU Border Program, and Regional Security Mechanisms in the Office of the Commissioner for Political Affairs and Peace and Security at the African Union Commission.
With a distinguished career spanning decades, Ambassador Ngoga has played a pivotal role in shaping Africa’s security and conflict prevention landscape. From 2014 to 2021, he led the Conflict Prevention and Early Warning Division at the AU Peace and Security Department, strengthening the AU’s capacity to mitigate crises through early warning mechanisms, preventive diplomacy, and enhanced collaboration with regional organizations. He was instrumental in supporting peace efforts in Libya, the Sahel, the Central African Republic, and the Horn of Africa, including his contribution to the 2019 CAR Global Agreement for Peace and National Reconciliation.
Prior to this, he served as a senior officer with the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM), supporting military operations and counterterrorism initiatives. His expertise extends to counterterrorism, climate security, governance, and institutional capacity building.
Ambassador Ngoga holds degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, Suffolk University, and the Harvard Kennedy School, with specialized training from NATO, the United Nations, the British Army’s Defence Intelligence and Security Centre, and the National Defense University.
Beyond his role at the AU, he serves on multiple boards, including the UNDP Africa Borderlands Centre, the International Commission on Inclusive Peace, and the Med-Or Foundation. In 2024, he was appointed President of the Commission on Sponsorship and Marketing of the Burundi Rugby Federation.
