In our final event of the year we  hosted Mr. Daron Acemoglu.

Mr. Acemoglu, who is Elizabeth and James Killian Professor of Economics at MIT and the author of the 2012 New York Times Bestseller Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty (coauthored with James A. Robinson) talked about the relationship between democracy and economic development.

Mr. Memduh Karakullukcu, chairman of Global Relation Forum,  shared his experiences as a US-trained lawyer with respect to establishing membership associations, legal databases and innovation hubs.

Litigating Human Rights Claims Before Domestic and International Courts: A View from the London Bar

In our second event we hosted Mr. Can Yeginsu, barrister at 4 New Square Chambers, London and a Harvard Law School graduate. Mr. Yeginsu who has appeared in cases before the English Court of Appeal, UK Supreme Court, and European Court of Human Rights, ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, the Federal Court of Malaysia, the Turkish Constitutional Court, and the Supreme Court of the Gambia, delivered a talk on human rights litigation.

Turkish – MELSA Baklava and Tea Night

In collaboration with the Middle Eastern Law Students Association (MELSA) we held a student gathering with Turkish tea and various Turkish sweets including baklava. With the purpose of introducing Turkish culture as well as promoting Turkish Law Students Association, one of our founding members and current SJD candidate Cem Tecimer played classical Turkish songs with the qanun (kanun) and gave information about classical Turkish music and Turkish culture.

Law and Diplomacy: A Diplomat’s Perspective

In our first event, we hosted Mr. Omur Budak, Consul General of the Republic of Turkey. Mr. Budak gave a speech on the role of law in diplomacy with a particular focus on international law. Drawing from his past experiences which include his service as Counselor at the Permanent Mission of Turkey to the UN, New York; Head of Section at the Deputy Undersecretariat for European Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Second Secretary at the Permanent Representation of Turkey to the EU, Brussels and Third Secretary at the Turkish Embassy in Baku, Azerbaijan, Mr Budak emphasized the central role law plays in various issues ranging from legal advice to state authorities to protection of Turkish citizens abroad.
