Former Chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Timothy Massad spoke on the future of cryptocurrency regulation and developments around Facebook’s Libra cryptocurrency. Mr. Massad is a lawyer and government official who served as Chairman of the CFTC under President Barack Obama. He previously oversaw the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) created by the U.S. government in response to the financial crisis of 2007–2008.

Professor Schrepel presented on the intersection of blockchain and antitrust. He is a Faculty Associate at the Berkman Center at Harvard University, an Assistant Professor in European Economic Law at Utrecht University School of Law, an Associate Researcher at University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, and an Invited Professor at Sciences Po Paris.

Pasquale Pistone, Academic Chairman and Jean Monnet Ad Personam Chair in European Tax Law, IBFD; WU Vienna, spoke about the current global tax regime. The talk explored how new business models challenge existing international tax allocation rules and how the European Union and OECD are working toward more inclusive solutions.

Joel Weight, former CTO and then-current COO of Medici Ventures, delivered an introductory session on blockchain for students with little or no background in the area. The event focused on demystifying the technology and providing a practical foundation for further study.

Robert Kilian, Chief Representative and General Counsel of N26, spoke about the legal, regulatory, and licensing issues the startup faced throughout its launch. He compared the regulatory environment in Europe and the U.S., discussed his career path, and answered students’ questions about building a financial institution from the ground up.
