
Margherita Bruti Liberati served as a Member of the European Commission’s Legal Service in the International Law and External Relations team before joining Harvard Law School as an LL.M. Candidate (’26). In that role, she represented the European Union in international disputes and advisory proceedings before different dispute settlement bodies, such as the International Court of Justice, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, the International Civil Aviation Organization and the Court of Justice of the European Union. She also advised on the negotiation and implementation of international agreements in the areas of migration and asylum, environment and climate change, sanctions and CFSP, international transport, and the law of the sea. Previously, Margherita practiced international trade and environmental law at Allen & Overy (now A&O Shearman) and Advant NCTM law firms in Brussels. Earlier in her career, she worked in refugee protection, assisting a senior Refugee-Status-Determination Judge at the Tribunal of Milan and serving in UNHCR’s Field Office in Guatemala. She holds a Master of Laws from the University of Milan and an MSc in International Development and Humanitarian Emergencies from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
