New International Arbitration Workshop to Launch in Harvard Law School

The first of its kind, the Workshop brings international arbitration luminaries to Harvard Law for a series of nine practice-oriented sessions over the 2017-2018 academic year
This academic year, international arbitration luminaries will arrive to Harvard Law School to provide unique insight into their practice. They will be presenting as part of the Harvard International Arbitration Law Students Association (HIALSA)’s first-ever International Arbitration Workshop, a nine-session program that will guide students through the lifecycle of an international arbitration dispute. The sessions will address topics such as written submissions, cross-examination, valuation of damages, cross-cultural advocacy, and the recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards.
The Workshop will commence this Friday, September 22. This first session will be led by Eugene Silva (ExxonMobil) and Hugh Carlson (Three Crowns), whose presentation will address the initial steps in an international arbitration.
According to Luke Sobota, one of the Workshop’s co-directors and a founding partner of the specialist international arbitration firm Three Crowns, “the Workshop presents a unique opportunity for students to gain significant exposure to the practice of international arbitration. Leading practitioners, arbitrators, and academics have graciously volunteered to lead the Workshop’s nine sessions, and their instruction will better allow participating students to understand and address the complexities of international arbitration.”
The Honorable Charles N. Brower (20 Essex Street, Judge ad hoc of the International Court of Justice, Judge of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal, and former Judge Ad Hoc of the Inter-America Court of Human Rights), one of the Workshop’s lecturers and a pre-eminent international arbitrator, similarly praised the breadth of the Workshop’s scope and its practical value. He observed that it represents “a complete A-to-Z introduction to international arbitration, the dominant dispute settlement system for foreign investors and host countries alike.” Judge Brower added that “anyone intending to be involved, whether as counsel, company lawyer, government official or academic, with international business matters, including trade and investment, will need to know what the Workshop teaches. One couldn’t find a better place to start learning.”
Other prominent figures in international arbitration who will lecture at the Workshop are Jean Kalicki (Kalicki Arbitration), Mark Kantor (independent arbitrator), and Professor William “Rusty” Park (Boston University School of Law), among many others.
Attendance at the Workshop is free.
