Welcome to the Christian Union Community!

Christian Union has been a centerpiece of my HLS community. CU is a community of people who are serious about studying the Bible together, praying together, and learning how to better follow God. I’ve so valued the weekly Bible courses, where we have lively discussions about the meaning of Scripture and how it applies to our lives. My peers are some of the most thoughtful, kind, and supportive people I’ve met at HLS and we’re united by our shared desire to know Jesus.

As one of the co-presidents, my prayer is that the Christian community at HLS would continue to grow and thrive as we seek to integrate our faith and work, deepen our personal relationships with Jesus, and meaningfully engage the broader HLS community. I hope you’ll join us!

Welcome to Harvard Law School. Coming (or returning) to HLS naturally brings a sense of excitement and possibility. There are endless opportunities to pursue, peers to engage with, and professors to learn from. But great as these things are, they will never, and can never be enough. As many students come to find, there is simply no credential or validation offered here that lasts or truly satisfies. Even the joy of committing to attend Harvard Law often gives way to stress about 1L grades, summer internships, and the like. So how should a Christian think about these hopes and desires? C.S. Lewis offers one diagnosis:

“[I]f we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desires, not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”

In many ways, that is what Christian Union at Harvard Law School is about—reminding, and sometimes rekindling, those true desires God has built in us. It means stepping back and considering what goals to pursue here, which goals not to pursue in accordance with the grand desires God has uniquely placed in us. At the Christian Union, we try to do this by being in a community of believers with differing gifts and perspectives, pursing the Lord through Bible study, prayer, and worship, and demonstrating God’s love to others. We hope you will join us on this journey!
