Friné Salguero

Director of the Fundación Banorte, the corporate social responsibility branch of Banorte Bank in Mexico.

Friné Salguero is the Director of Fundación Banorte (The Banorte Foundation), the corporate social responsibility branch of Banorte Bank, one of the seven largest banks and one of the top 15 companies in Mexico.  Her work merges corporate means with social change to improve the financial lives of women in Mexico and improve the social ecosystem in Mexico at large.

Friné is currently leading the institutional re-engineering of the bank’s corporate social responsibility strategies.  Banorte is the only bank in Mexico with specific financial products and services for women.  Its brand, ‘Banorte Mujer’ includes special services and fees for mortgages, credit cards, bank accounts, car insurance, maternity payment plans for pregnant women, and even stolen purse insurance.  Banorte is addressing an important reality in Mexico, which ranks very low in labor and economic opportunities for women resulting in a substantial economic gender gap.

In the words of the HLS community member who nominated her, “Friné’s work also impacts the social sector at large.  Friné and The Foundation’s conducted an exhaustive mapping of Mexican social organizations that support women’s rights issues.  The Foundation then financed 54 projects focused on women with 400,000 direct beneficiaries—250,000 of which are women.  Ultimately, Friné hopes her work will force policy change in Mexico.”
