ECONOMIC IMPACT PAYMENTS: (last updated April 16, 2020)
Most people DO NOT NEED TO DO ANYTHING to get their Economic Impact Payment (EIP).
If you filed taxes for tax years 2018 OR 2019 (and are eligible), you will receive a payment without taking any further steps. If you have direct deposit information on file with the IRS, the payment will be direct deposited into your account. If you do not have direct deposit information on file, the IRS will mail you a check. See below for how to provide the IRS direct deposit information and other FAQs like what to do if you do not file. The IRS has already started depositing payments!
How do I avoid scams? When in doubt, only ever click links from IRS.gov webpages. Doublecheck any information you read online, on social media, or receive by email by visiting IRS.gov directly. The IRS will not call, text, email, or contact you on social media asking for personal or bank account information – even related to the economic impact payments. Also, watch out for emails with attachments or links claiming to have special information about economic impact payments or refunds.
How do I check the status of my payment? Use the IRS “Get My Payment” tool (https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here).
How do I give the IRS direct deposit information? Use the IRS “Get My Payment” tool.
What if I did not file taxes for 2018 or 2019? If you do not normally file (for example because you are below the income threshold), see the IRS “Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info“ tool (https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here). If you normally need to file taxes but did not file in 2018 and have not yet filed in 2019, you will need to file to get your payment.
What is EIP? Where can I get general information? I have more questions? General information about the Economic Impact Payments (EIP) is available on a special section of IRS.gov (https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payment-information-center). The IRS has answers to many of the most common questions.
