Global Legal Education Forum: Opening Panel
This opening panel will introduce and anticipate some of the key debates that will take place during the Global Legal Education Forum. It will start with a discussion of the content (if any) of “global legal education” in dif- ferent fields of law and regions of the world. The panel will also discuss whether the globalization of Western legal thought and its debates—for example, between post-realist rationalists versus skeptics—is desirable in Asia, Africa, Latin America and parts of the West today, or whether the developing world demands a new language and a new understanding of law and legal theory that supports and fosters new possibilities of thought and action. The panel will then focus on the agenda of a global law school in the 21st century and question whether law schools are only “professional” schools or should also have a political agenda and a commitment to social change. Finally, the panel will discuss the role of doctoral programs in law in an increasingly globalized legal environment.
