The symposium begins with the\u00a0underlying notion that independent and sustainable development cannot occur without the\u00a0emergence of successful, exportable domestic industries. While approaches such as\u00a0microfinance gained traction in the past decade, efforts to grow subsistence-level producers and\u00a0informal businesses into more efficient medium-sized enterprises in developing countries have\u00a0remained frustratingly slow.
