Project descriptions are available <a href=\"https:\/\/orgs.law.harvard.edu\/lids\/apply\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>LIDS is firmly committed to two goals: making a difference in international development and providing our members with opportunities to get involved in hands-on, exciting, and high-impact work in a field of their choice. To serve these goals, LIDS sets up projects with leading organizations and entrepreneurs active at the intersection of law and development.Over the last five\u00a0years, LIDS has worked on over 50\u00a0projects with more than 35 different organizations.<\/p>\n<p>During the 2019-20 academic year, we will continue to run projects in collaboration with\u00a0international development organization partners. These projects will be carried out with,\u00a0and on behalf of, our partner law firm,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.orrick.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Orrick, Herrington &amp; Sutcliffe LLP<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threecrownsllp.com\">Three Crowns<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our project teams typically consist of 5-10 graduate students (from schools such\u00a0as HLS, HKS, Fletcher, or MIT) and work directly with a senior client at one of\u00a0our partners \u2014 generally, a development-focused NGO, IGO, an entrepreneur\u00a0serving the bottom of the pyramid, or foreign government. LIDS projects\u00a0are excellent opportunities to become an expert on an exciting development\u00a0issue, hone research and writing skills, become a great team player and build a\u00a0professional network. (And, according to our members, they\u2019re also a lot of fun!)<\/p>\n<p>If you are a current graduate student in the Boston area interested in participating\u00a0in a LIDS Project, please keep reading below for more\u00a0details.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To be eligible to work on a LIDS project, you must be a current graduate student\u00a0in the Boston area. Students can join a project as a team leader or a team member.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Team Leaders<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Team Leaders are responsible for managing the project. This role involves\u00a0liaising with the client and the attorney assigned to the project,\u00a0communicating frequently with team members, running weekly or bi-weekly\u00a0team meetings, and ensuring that the final product is of high quality. Leadership,\u00a0communications skills, and an ability to manage a team are important skills\u00a0for this role. Expertise in the subject matter, while helpful, is not essential, but\u00a0a demonstrated interest in the topic is expected. There are typically two team\u00a0members assigned to each project, and they are each expected to dedicate 5-10 hours per week to the project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Team Members<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Team Members are primarily responsible for preparing the deliverable, which\u00a0may be a legal memo, policy report, business plan, among other possibilities. This\u00a0role involves research work, which can include conventional research (online,\u00a0libraries, etc.) and also, in some cases, interviewing individuals or experts on\u00a0the subject matter. Being a team member is an excellent opportunity to work\u00a0with an external development group and gain subject matter expertise and\u00a0valuable employment skills. Expertise in the subject matter is not essential, but\u00a0a demonstrated interest in the topic is expected. Research and writing skills are\u00a0important for this position, as is an ability to work on a team and meet deadlines.\u00a0Team members are expected to dedicate 3-5 hours per week to the project.
