Competition in healthcare is not like competition in most other industries. Those who pay (typically the insurance companies) don’t choose the products or services being purchased. And those who choose (typically the doctors and patients) don’t pay most of the cost. This, among other unique features of the healthcare industry, creates a market that can be manipulated by institutions with market power.
