SUMMARY:Mississippi Delta Lunch Talk
DESCRIPTION:Please join the HLS Mississippi Delta Project for our annual Delta Celebration. We’ll be joined by Dr. Kecia Johnson\, Assistant Professor at Mississippi State University and Co-Director of the Mississippi Food Insecurity Project. \nDr. Johnson’s presentation will provide a conceptual framework for understanding how individuals with a felony drug conviction may be at a greater risk of being food insecure due to lifetime restrictions or modified bans from receiving food assistance under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The lack of these benefits limits access to adequate nutrition because SNAP provides a safety net for the formerly incarcerated. The SNAP benefit ban may result in drug felons and their families experiencing food insecurity. The policy implications of this legislation\, the recent decision of the state of Mississippi to opt out of enforcing the lifetime ban\, and its impact on the reintegration of those with drug felonies into the community will be discussed. Lunch will be served.

SUMMARY:Biomarkers in Cancer Approvals: New Opportunities and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:The FDA recently approved Keytruda and Vitrakvi\, two cancer drugs targeting biomarkers without reference to the site of the disease. Defining cancer in terms of biomarkers alone may require us to rethink the design of clinical trials and raises challenges for the traditional FDA approval process. What is the future of these so-called “tumor-agnostic” therapies\, and how will they be translated into effective treatment options in cancer and other diseases? More info here.

SUMMARY:A Critical Win: The Fight to Reinstate Protection of Medical Care for Critically Ill Immigrant Children
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion with Tony Marino\, the Director of Legal Services at the Irish International Immigrant Center (IIIC)\, and Dr. Fiona Danaher\, a pediatrician with Mass General Hospital and Co-chair of the MGH Immigrant Health Coalition about the fight to reinstate the Medical Deferred Action program which let immigrants remain in the country while they or their relatives receive life-saving medical care.  In Boston\, over 20 families with children fighting cancer\, HIV\, cerebral palsy\, muscular dystrophy\, epilepsy and other serious conditions were directly impact by the ending of this program by US Citizenship and Immigration Services.  Mr. Marino and Dr. Danaher campaigned against the elimination of the program including testifying before Congress\, writing op-eds\, and speaking with the media.  Local groups also represented IIIC in a lawsuit challenging the termination of the program.   A month after it was first announced that the program was being cut\, the Administration reversed its decision and reinstated the program after the extensive advocacy campaign.  Come learn about this critical and life-saving work on behalf of and alongside immigrants in our community and around the nation. SUMMARY:Hyper-Personalized Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Over 22 million patients in the U.S. live with rare genetic diseases for which there are no FDA-approved treatments. Over 3.5 million of these patients are children who will die before the age of five. While genome sequencing can help diagnose these patients\, it is far too long and costly to develop treatments for their orphan diseases through usual forms of scientific and pharmaceutical investment.\nUsing a case study from Boston Children’s Hospital\, Drs. Timothy Yu and Insoo Hyun discuss the scientific and ethical challenges facing single-patient (N=1) trials\, as well as the opportunities presented by this entrée into what may be termed “hyper-personalized medicine.” Register here.
