{"id":338,"date":"2017-09-20T22:53:03","date_gmt":"2017-09-20T22:53:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hlsorgs3stg.wpenginepowered.com\/hialsa\/?page_id=338"},"modified":"2018-06-12T14:51:03","modified_gmt":"2018-06-12T14:51:03","slug":"press-release","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/orgs.law.harvard.edu\/hialsa\/2017-2018\/press-release\/","title":{"rendered":"Press Release"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>New International Arbitration Workshop to Launch in Harvard Law School<br \/>\n<\/strong>Cambridge, MA | September 21, 2017 (Updated October 11, 2017)<\/p>\n<p><em>The first of its kind, the Workshop brings international arbitration luminaries to Harvard Law for a series of nine practice-oriented sessions over the 2017-2018 academic year<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This academic year, international arbitration luminaries will arrive to Harvard Law School to provide unique insight into their practice.\u00a0 They will be presenting as part of the Harvard International Arbitration Law Students Association (<strong><em>HIALSA<\/em><\/strong>)\u2019s first-ever International Arbitration Workshop, a nine-session program that will guide students through the lifecycle of an international arbitration dispute.\u00a0 The sessions will address topics such as written submissions, cross-examination, valuation of damages, cross-cultural advocacy, and the recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards.<\/p>\n<p>The Workshop will commence this Friday, September 22.\u00a0 This first session will be led by Eugene Silva (ExxonMobil) and Hugh Carlson (Three Crowns), whose presentation will address the initial steps in an international arbitration.<\/p>\n<p>According to Luke Sobota, one of the Workshop\u2019s co-directors and a founding partner of the specialist international arbitration firm Three Crowns, \u201cthe Workshop presents a unique opportunity for students to gain significant exposure to the practice of international arbitration.\u00a0 Leading practitioners, arbitrators, and academics have graciously volunteered to lead the Workshop\u2019s nine sessions, and their instruction will better allow participating students to understand and address the complexities of international arbitration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Honorable Charles N. Brower (20 Essex Street, Judge ad hoc of the International Court of Justice, Judge of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal, and former Judge Ad Hoc of the Inter-America Court of Human Rights), one of the Workshop\u2019s lecturers and a pre-eminent international arbitrator, similarly praised the breadth of the Workshop\u2019s scope and its practical value. He observed that it represents \u201ca complete A-to-Z introduction to international arbitration, the dominant dispute settlement system for foreign investors and host countries alike.\u201d\u00a0 Judge Brower added that \u201canyone intending to be involved, whether as counsel, company lawyer, government official or academic, with international business matters, including trade and investment, will need to know what the Workshop teaches.\u00a0 One couldn\u2019t find a better place to start learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other prominent figures in international arbitration who will lecture at the Workshop are Jean Kalicki (Kalicki Arbitration), Mark Kantor (independent arbitrator), and Professor William \u201cRusty\u201d Park (Boston University School of Law), among many others.<\/p>\n<p>Attendance at the Workshop is free.<\/p>\n<p>The Workshop\u2019s co-founders and co-directors are Luke Sobota, Hugh Carlson (Three Crowns), Hiroko Yamamoto (Harvard Law \u201918), and Christian Vandergeest (Harvard Law \u201918).<\/p>\n<p>Additional information about the Workshop is available at: <a href=\"https:\/\/orgs.law.harvard.edu\/hialsa\/workshop\/\">https:\/\/orgs.law.harvard.edu\/hialsa\/workshop\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>HIALSA is a student organization at Harvard Law School founded in 2015, and now boasts more than 160 members and regularly hosts in its lectures leading practitioners, arbitrators, and academics. \u00a0Our generous Workshop sponsors include Cleary Gottlieb, Three Crowns, and White &amp;
