I. Introduction

Originally owned by Lilly Cassirer Neubauer, a Jewish collector, who sold the painting under duress to evade Nazi persecution in 1939, this artwork has become a central topic for debates concerning ownership, justice, and, moreover, ethical implications of owning art with such a troubled history. These implications extend to the responsibilities of current possessors, who must not only acknowledge the artwork’s past but also maintain a moral duty to respect the full picture of its provenance, particularly when that provenance involves historical injustices.
The painting ultimately found its current home in Spain’s Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection in Madrid.
