SUMMARY:Institute to End Mass Incarceration: Spring Clinic Info Session (Lunch Provided)
DESCRIPTION:The Institute to End Mass Incarceration (IEMI) is hosting an info session for our Spring Clinic next Tuesday (10/4) at 12:15 in WCC 1015. The blurb is below and the link to the Calendar@Law posting is here. \nThe Institute to End Mass Incarceration was launched at Harvard Law School in the summer of 2021. Its mission is to radically decarcerate the United States by helping to build and strategically deploy collective\, community based power toward decarceral ends. To do this\, the Institute works to support and build bridges between community organizers and lawyers\, with a particular focus on helping public defenders develop movement-orientated modes of practice. The Institute runs a clinic at HLS co-taught by its directors\, Professors Andrew Crespo and Premal Dharia. Applications for the spring-semester clinic are due by October 14. HLS Students interested in learning more about the Institute and the clinic are invited to join an information session at 12:15 in WCC 1015\, where Professors Crespo and Dharia will describe the Institute’s main projects and answer student questions.

SUMMARY:Centering the Voices of Young People in Foster Care Reform (Co-sponsorship with the Child Advocacy Program) [Food Provided]
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, Sept. 27\, 12:30-1:20 PM \nWCC 3018\nLunch provided. RSVP here to help with food ordering. \nAdvocates for marginalized groups talk frequently about centering the voices of communities and other stakeholders to ensure that those most closely affected by the proposed policies drive reform.  Nevertheless\, those same advocates often lack a clear plan for how to engage with those stakeholders in a way that allows for a true exercise of power in decision-making.  For young people involved in the foster care system\, arguably among the most marginalized and disenfranchised of groups\, advocates must overcome additional obstacles including societal conditioning that adults are typically in a better position to know what is best for young people.  Betsy Fordyce\, Executive Director of the Rocky Mountain Children’s Law Center\, will share her organization’s systematic process for building and sharing power among transition-aged foster youth mobilizing for Child Welfare System reform in Colorado.  She will describe a youth empowerment framework the organization uses to guide their thinking and will then explain the steps that organizers take to lift the voices of foster youth around the state in pursuit of legislative and other policy advocacy\, providing a blueprint for others to emulate.
