Please see<a href=\"https:\/\/orgs.law.harvard.edu\/els\/jobs-internships\/2019-internship-and-fellowship-opportunities\/\"> 2019 internship and fellowship opportunities here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Clinical Opportunities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Harvard provides a variety of clinical opportunities in environmental law through the <a href=\"https:\/\/clinics.law.harvard.edu\/environment\/\">Emmett Environmental Law &amp; Policy Clinic<\/a> (ELPC).&nbsp; The clinic coordinates numerous term-time externships, including government jobs with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usdoj.gov\/enrd\">Department of Justice<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mass.gov\/dep\">Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/region1\">Environmental Protection Agency<\/a>; issue-oriented public interest work with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clf.org\/\">Conservation Law Foundation<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catf.us\/\">Clean Air Task Force<\/a>; and community advocacy with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ace-ej.org\/\">Alternatives for Communities and the Environment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy clinical at the Clean Air Task Force (CATF) gave me a far richer understanding of environmental laws than I would have gained from simply reading the statutes and leading cases. Most importantly, I got to work with inspiring lawyers who know the laws and are working every day to ensure that they are enforced.&#8221;<br>\u2014Christine Speidel, Class of \u201806<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to externships, ELPC offers a number of exciting \u201cin-house\u201d projects in environmental law each year. &nbsp;For instance, clinic students have produced consumer guides for renewable energy options in New England, submitted comments on the Federal Trade Commission\u2019s \u201cgreen labeling\u201d guidelines, and participated in case development for cutting-edge litigation.&nbsp; ELPC also offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/hls.harvard.edu\/clinics\/in-house-clinics\/environmental-law-and-policy-clinic\/\">companion course<\/a> introducing students to the realities of environmental law practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information on ELPC, contact Andrew Mergen, Clinic Director, at amergen@law.harvard.edu.&nbsp; Students can also explore environmental opportunities through the <a href=\"https:\/\/hls.harvard.edu\/clinics\/externship-clinics\/government-lawyer-us-attorney-clinic\/\">Government Lawyer<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/hls.harvard.edu\/clinics\/in-house-clinics\/international-human-rights-clinic\/\">International Human Rights<\/a> clinical programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Summer Jobs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>HLS students can pursue a variety of summer jobs in environmental work. Many ELS members volunteer the summer after their first year to do public interest work, and many also volunteer the summer after their second year. The <a href=\"https:\/\/hls.harvard.edu\/bernard-koteen-office-of-public-interest-advising\/\">HLS Office of Public Interest Advising<\/a> offers plenty of information for current and prospective students on environmental law positions in the U.S. and worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In past summers, ELS members have held jobs in government at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usdoj.gov\/enrd\">Department of Justice<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/\">Environmental Protection Agency<\/a>; at public interest groups including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthjustice.org\/\">Earthjustice<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/\">Natural Resources Defense Council<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clf.org\/\">Conservation Law Foundation<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ciel.org\/\">Center for International Environmental Law<\/a>; and in many other environment-oriented positions. ELS members have also held positions at some of the nation\u2019s top law firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em> &#8220;At Earthjustice&#8217;s Bozeman office, I spent the summer doing exciting and substantive work on the high-profile &#8216;roadless rule&#8217; litigation, as well as numerous other interesting cases, all while looking out of my office window at the breathtaking Montana landscape that I explored on weekends.\u201d<\/em><br>\u2014Charley Scott, Class of \u201906<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year, ELS sponsors a summer job panel where students talk about their past jobs and offer advice and information to current students.&nbsp; In addition, ELS helps to organize career panels which bring current environmental law practitioners to HLS to share their experiences and answer questions.&nbsp; Members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/orgs.law.harvard.edu\/els\/about-us\/\">ELS mailing list<\/a> will receive information on the dates and locations of these panels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Funding and Fellowships<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For students committed to a career in environmental law, a number of funding opportunities are available for summer and post-graduate work.&nbsp; Opportunities include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the two-year <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.harvard.edu\/programs\/elp\/jobs\/Beagle2.pdf\">Beagle Fellowship<\/a> at Natural Resources Defense Council;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the two-year <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/region1\/attorney\/index.html\">EPA Honors Program<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usdoj.gov\/oarm\/arm\/sp\/sp.htm\">Department of Justice\u2019s Summer Law Intern Program<\/a> and post-graduate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usdoj.gov\/oarm\/arm\/hp\/hp.htm\">Attorney General\u2019s Honors Program<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the EELP <a href=\"https:\/\/eelp.law.harvard.edu\/eelp-2025-2026-legal-fellowship\/\">Legal Fellowship <\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>HLS also offers guaranteed summer funding to students pursuing public interest work through the <a href=\"https:\/\/hls.harvard.edu\/dept\/sfs\/spif\/\">Summer Public Interest Funding<\/a> program.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Alumni Resources<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>HLS alumni working in environmental law are a key resource for current students considering careers in the field.&nbsp; Alumni participate in ELS projects and events, speak to and mentor students, and network with other graduates pursuing environmental law.
