SUMMARY:"For Hierarchy in Animal Ethics" with Shelly Kagan
DESCRIPTION:A common view in contemporary work on animal ethics is that animals should be recognized as having the same moral status as people. (After all\, “pain is pain\,” as the point is sometimes put.)  However\, in a recent book\, How to Count Animals\, more or less\, philosopher Shelly Kagan argues instead for a hierarchical approach\, according to which although animals do have moral standing\, they have a lower moral status than people have (with some animals having lower status than others). In this talk Professor Kagan will introduce the dominant “unitarian” account\, sketch two main arguments against it\, and note some possible worries about the hierarchical alternative. \nShelly Kagan is the Clark Professor of Philosophy at Yale University. His books include The Limits of Morality\, Normative Ethics\, and The Geometry of Desert. A popular lecturer at Yale\, the videos of the lectures from his class on death (available online at http://oyc.yale.edu/philosophy/death/) have been viewed millions of times around the world\, and his book based on the class\, Death\, has been a national bestseller in S. Korea and Japan. \nRegister in advance for this webinar here.

SUMMARY:Aquaculture and Animal Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:In 2019\, Animal Outlook released footage and information from an undercover investigation of Cooke Aquaculture’s salmon hatchery in Maine. The investigation showed unsustainable and environmentally unsound aquaculture practices\, unhealthy living conditions\, other unsafe and inhumane threats to the fish\, and abuse. After state law enforcement declined to prosecute the hatchery for cruelty and neglect to fish\, Animal Outlook followed up by initiating a lawsuit against Cooke Aquaculture\, challenging their advertising claims on sustainability\, “natural\,” and “humane” practices based on evidence uncovered during the investigation along with other environmental violations across the multiple states. \nAt this talk\, Erin Wing\, the undercover investigator who captured much of this footage and information\, will highlight some experiences from the investigation. Will Lowrey\, Counsel at Animal Outlook\, will then discuss the prosecution attempt along with the lawsuit that followed\, explaining the legal theories and strategies behind their suit. \nRegister in advance for this webinar here. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Food Law Society.

SUMMARY:Podcast Discussion: The Beef with Meat\, with Dylan Matthews
DESCRIPTION:Join the HLS Animal Law Society and HLS Effective Altruism for a discussion with Dylan Matthews\, host of Vox’s Future Perfect podcast. Future Perfect’s newest season\, The Beef with Meat\, explores how the meat we eat affects us all. It affects non-human animals\, but also the farmers and factory workers who raise those animals and slaughter them. It affects the communities living around those farms and slaughterhouses. It affects our health care system and our ability to treat infections. And it affects our environment. \nThe episodes are quick (25 to 30 minutes). We encourage you to listen to all episodes in Season 3\, and especially the one about manure lagoons\, before the meeting. But even if you cannot listen\, feel free to join the discussion anyway! \nDylan Matthews is a senior correspondent at Vox\, which he joined at launch. He previously worked as a staff reporter focused on the Federal Reserve\, the federal budget\, and tax policy at the Washington Post. His work at Vox includes features on using gene editing to eradicate malaria\, basic income experiments in Kenya\, a Facebook cofounder’s multi-billion dollar effort to reinvent philanthropy\, and deep dives on welfare reform\, Social Security Disability Insurance\, and the Clinton Foundation. \nListen to the podcast here\, and register for the discussion here.

SUMMARY:Where Do Dogs Come From?
DESCRIPTION:Where do dogs come from? Where does homo sapiens come from? Prof. Cass Sunstein believes the answer to both questions comes from a single source: domestication. It is agreed that dogs come from wolves (or more likely\, that dogs and modern wolves have a common\, wolf-like ancestor). Recent research is converging on the conclusion that human beings did not domesticate dogs; dogs domesticated themselves. Tameness\, or docility\, was the defining characteristic of the proto-dogs who are the ancestors of the modern breeds. This conclusion provides a window onto the notion of domestication\, which is defined above all by a reduction in reactive aggression. Bonobos\, sometimes described as the Dogs of the Apes\, have the same relationship to chimpanzees as dogs have to wolves. Recent research also suggests that Homo sapiens has precisely the same relationship to extinct human species (such as Neanderthal Man) as bonobos do to chimpanzees\, and dogs do to wolves. In a sense\, Homo sapiens is the Dog of the Humans. A key reason is that Homo sapiens has lower levels of reactive aggression. \nPlant-based lunch will be served. Be sure to share the event with your friends! \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Animal Law & Policy Program and the Animal Law Society. \n

SUMMARY:Angela Harris - The Intersection of Race\, Class\, and Gender with Animal Protection
DESCRIPTION:Angela Harris is the Distinguished Professor of Law\, Boochever and Bird Endowed Chair for the Study and Teaching of Freedom of Equality\, and Director\, Aoki Center for Critical Race and Nation Studies at the UC Davis School of Law (King Hall).  She writes widely in the field of critical legal theory\, examining how law sometimes reinforces and sometimes challenges subordination on the basis of race\, gender\, sexuality\, class\, and other dimensions of power and identity. \nIn 2009\, Prof. Harris published an article entitled Should People of Color Support Animal Rights? in the Journal of Animal Law.  Its summary states: \n“There is anecdotal reason to believe that many people of color – in particular\, African Americans – view animals rights as a “white” phenomenon. Taking the case study of a PETA campaign that compared animal abuse to the Atlantic slave trade\, the author explores reasons why people of color might be justified in seeing the animal rights movement as incorporating racist stereotypes\, but concludes that people of color ought to support an antiracist version of animal rights.” \nProf. Kristen Stilt\, Faculty Director of the Harvard Animal Law & Policy Program will engage Prof. Harris in a conversation about these issues and then moderate a discussion with the audience. \nThe event is free and open to the public\, and a plant-based lunch will be provided.

After 30 years of struggling with existing animal welfare laws\, Steve and his legal team\, the Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP)\, recently filed the first ever lawsuits seeking to transform an animal from a “thing” with no rights to a “person” with legal protections.\n\n \nSteven Wise will join HLS Professor Kristen Stilt for a discussion after the film.\n \nIndian food dinner will be served.\n \nCosponsored by ALPP and SALDF

SUMMARY:Animals\, Law\, and Religion Program talk at Harvard Divinity School
DESCRIPTION:The Animals\, Law\, and Religion Project will be bringing Professor Donovan Schaefer (Univ. of Oxford) to campus on March 31 for a talk at the Harvard Divinity School’s Center for the Study of World Religions at 5:15pm: https://www.facebook.com/events/974532365955943/. Prof. Schaefer will be discussing his new book\, Religious Affects: Animality\, Evolution\, and Power (Duke University Press\, 2015)\, in which Professor Schaefer places affect theory in conversation with post-Darwinian evolutionary theory to explore the extent to which nonhuman animals have the capacity to practice religion\, linking human forms of religion and power through a new analysis of the chimpanzee waterfall dance as observed by Jane Goodall. He will be presented by HDS Professor Kimberly Patton. \n \n“You Don’t Know What Pain Is: Affect\, Religion\, and Animal Ethics”\n\nJoin us for a talk by Donovan Schaefer\, departmental Lecturer in Science and Religion\, University of Oxford.
