WHAT&#8217;S HAPPENING BETWEEN ARMENIA AND AZERBAIJAN?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nothing below comes from Armenian sources or opinion articles<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #eb2f4b\">1) Azerbaijan unilaterally launched a massive attack on the Armenian-populated Republic of Artsakh.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">Armenia has nothing to gain through conflict, and all signs indicate that this escalation began when Azerbaijan unilaterally attacked. Read this analysis from Thomas De Waal, the foremost third-party scholar on the conflict. <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/PE33-GAVN\">https:\/\/perma.cc\/PE33-GAVN<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">In the words of the Brookings Institution\u2019s Pavel Baev, Azerbaijan \u201ctim[ed] the offensive to minimize attention\u201d and \u201chas been preparing for a new war, meticulously investing plenty of its petro-revenues into equipping its armed forces with modern weapons.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/9KT5-EZBP\"> https:\/\/perma.cc\/9KT5-EZBP<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #eb2f4b\">2) Azerbaijan has an overwhelming military advantage.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">Azerbaijan spends six times more than Armenia on its military and enjoys massive air and artillery superiority. <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/PUX6-ET54\">https:\/\/perma.cc\/PUX6-ET54<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #eb2f4b\">3) Azerbaijan is bolstered by thousands of Syrian fighters deployed by Turkey.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">\u2026a reality so indisputable that it\u2019s corroborated by both CNN <u>(<\/u><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/JB3X-Y6TB\">https:\/\/perma.cc\/JB3X-Y6TB<\/a><u>) <\/u>and Fox News (<a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/RM6K-55LX\">https:\/\/perma.cc\/RM6K-55LX<\/a><u>)<\/u>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">Many of these fighters are coerced and exploited<strong>. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/BS4E-DWS4\">https:\/\/perma.cc\/BS4E-DWS4<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #eb2f4b\">4) Azerbaijan continues to systematically shell civilian targets of no military significance.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The city of Stepanakert (population 60,000, in a valley far from the front line) is suffering from ongoing and indiscriminate artillery attacks<strong>. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/34JL-FX6D\">https:\/\/perma.cc\/34JL-FX6D<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>II. SHOULD ARMENIANS OR AZERBAIJANIS CONTROL NAGORNO KARABAKH (ARTSAKH)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #eb2f4b\">1) Artsakh\u2019s population is overwhelmingly Armenian and has been since reliable records were first kept.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">According to a report prepared for the U.S. Army by the Federal Research Division, as of 1924,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">94.4 percent Nagorno Karabakh\u2019s population was Armenian. According to the same report, this proportion has never since declined below 76%. <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/KPK3-B6QZ\">https:\/\/perma.cc\/KPK3-B6QZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #eb2f4b\">2) Artsakh has legitimately expressed its desire for independence. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">\u201cOn December 10, 1991, a Karabakh referendum chose independence,\u201d from the Soviet Union. Artsakh \u201cofficially declared independence on January 6, 1992.\u201d (Congressional Research Service). This is the same way Azerbaijan itself established independence. <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/M8F2-739R\">https:\/\/perma.cc\/M8F2-739R<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #eb2f4b\">3) Azerbaijan&#8217;s record of killing Armenians under its administration and destroying Armenian heritage within its territory demonstrates that the Armenians of Artsakh can never be subjected to Baku\u2019s control.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">Between 1988 and 1990, the Azerbaijani public committed gruesome pogroms against their Armenian neighbors. <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/8VRV-9UHS\">https:\/\/perma.cc\/8VRV-9UHS<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">In 2005, an Azerbaijani (Ramil Safarov) used an axe to murder his sleeping Armenian classmate at a training academy in Hungary.\u00a0 Safarov returned to Azerbaijan in 2012, where he was welcomed with a military promotion, adoring crowds, a free apartment, and a special pension. <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/6D2U-W4HX\">https:\/\/perma.cc\/6D2U-W4HX\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">In 2016, Azerbaijan briefly captured an Armenian-populated village in Artsakh, torturing and executing the elderly residents who remained. <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/7LXU-C8DZ\">https:\/\/perma.cc\/7LXU-C8DZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">In Nakhichevan\u2014a historically Armenian province under Azerbaijani control\u2014authorities have deliberately destroyed thousands of UNESCO-protected Armenian monuments and at least 89 churches. <a href=\"https:\/\/perma.cc\/T42M-4U6G\">https:\/\/perma.cc\/T42M-4U6G<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Download the Fact Sheet I.
